Matt Brown and The Fellowship Students will be doing a rare live performance of Brown’s musical opus, Rainbow Around The Sun (trailer), this Saturday night at The Plaza Theater in Oklahoma City. They will be performing music from Brown’s recent indie rock opera by the same name. The performance begins at 8pm and is FREE! Reservations are required and can be made by calling (405) 524-9312. Donations are accepted.
As a prelude to that performance, The Fellowship Students will be performing their non-Rainbow songs tonight at 51st Street Speakeasy in Oklahoma City. It kicks off at 10:30pm and admission is just $5. The show will be recorded for a live album and it may just be one of their final performances.
Originally conceived as a video accompaniment for the Matthew Alvin Brown’s solo album, ‘Rainbow Around the Sun’ has become what some are calling “The Indie Rock Opera from Oklahoma”. All songs in the film were written by Brown and recorded with his bandmates of former (?) Oklahoma City band The Fellowship Students.
Based on the album by Matthew Alvin Brown, ‘Rainbow Around the Sun’ tells the story of Zachary Blasto, a hard-drinking musician who creates madcap musical fantasies to avoid dealing with the downward spiral of his personal life. When faced with the loss of someone he loves, Zach must choose whether to face his demons or surrender to the madness of his imaginary world.
In the tradition of classic music films like “Tommy” and “Hedwig and the Angry Inch,” ‘Rainbow’ tells its story almost entirely through imagery and song. Scenes are sequenced like songs on a record, seamlessly moving from dramatic moments to honky-tonk performances and fully animated Busby Berkely-style hallucinations. The result is a deeply personal film that plays like a favorite album come to life.
‘Rainbow Around the Sun’ was selected to the IFP Narrative Rough Cut Lab in June of 2007. The film is currently wrapping up post production for a festival premiere in early 2008.
