Second Source for OK Music Though Boyd Street should be your one and only source for Oklahoma music, OklahomaRock.com has many features that might pique your interest.
by Becky Carman
This is my last piece for Boyd Street, and my departure is all the more bittersweet, as I don’t yet know to whom I am passing the Music Editor torch. While I have faith that whoever comes next will be passionate, insightful and, hopefully, have good taste (though I’m sure some of you have questioned mine on at least one occasion), I will leave you with a different resource. It has prove invaluable to me since I’ve been interested in the Oklahoma music scene.
OklahomaRock.com is a wellspring of precious information regarding what’s going on with Oklahoma music, and I don’t just mean the contemporary indie pop and rock of my sometimes-narrow expertise. You can visit the site (and its news blog) for updates on everything from Oklahoma City band The Uglysuit to worship artist Charlie Hall to American Idol’s David Cook.
A virtual collection of local rock all-stars, RAF kicked off the night with a loud and psychedelic set — and they sounded great on the outdoor stage’s sound system. Members of The Starkweather Boys, The Non, Gravity Propulsion System, Colourmusic and The Oh Johnny! Girls braved the heat to watch RAF,
Klipspringer stormed into the dome of douchebaggery known as McNellie’s for a shock and awe offensive. Residential rock god Ty Kamm delivered a confident showman’s performance, thumbing his proverbial nose at the frat contingent. Among the non-douchebags present were Acoustic Ross, members of Gravity Propulsion System and Glister.
Packing out the huge, sweaty room of The Blank Slate, El Paso Hot Button delivered a blazing hot performance. With billows of green smoke rising from underneath, the one-man band had the crowd eating from the palm of his hand. His show-ending stage dive put the cherry on the top of the rock sundae. Members of Callupsie, Black Swan, Gravity Propulsion System, The Oh Johnny! Girls and Dance Robots Dance were seen smiling and rocking out with EPHB.
It was a big week for Samantha Crain. She released her Ramseur Records debut, was named Paste Magazine’s artist of the week and was named KCRW’s Top Tune on Tuesday. She brought her soulful, passionate music to an intimate DFest crowd of 130+. The tone Crain sets during her live show is hard to not be drawn into. Members of Student Film, Mayola, Vandevander and John Moreland and the Black Gold Band also found themselves caught in Crain’s music web.
10pm - Everything @ Everywhere
From 10pm to Midnight was a bit of a blur. Hung around The Continental waiting on Crocodile to play, as the previous band ran over time. Caught a glimpse of 90s-head bangin’ Helmet. Ran back to catch Crocodile again, who had just finished. Sat down at Arnie’s for a bit, listening to the sounds of Hush Hush, Commotion. At this point, the two days of non-stop movement was beginning to take its toll.
I said it last year — Ladies Love Ryan Lindsey. Performing with a full band is a departure from the Ryan Lindsey norm, but it was a refreshing experience. A crowd of 200+, including Beau Jennings, members of Callupsie, El Paso Hot Button, Vandevander, Student Film, The Uglysuit, The Stock Market Crash and, reportedly, some A&R reps soaked in the set. As Ryan posed for pictures with some females after the show, a male audience member proclaimed, “He’s so hot!”. Guess some Men Love Ryan Lindsey too.
Although they left thousands of fans waiting over an hour for the beginning of their set, The Roots came on stage and delivered to some very happy and excited fans. Mentally, I was already checked out at this point. But, P.D.A., AM, members of The Starkweather Boys, Black Swan, Vandevander and Gravity Propulsion System took in the show from the side stage.
Looking for a place to rest, we stumbled into Dirty’s Tavern and happily found John Moreland & the Black Gold Band. Their fliers that littered the floor described them perfectly - “PURE UNFUCKED WITH ROCK & ROLL”. The final song of the night “Endless Oklahoma Sky” underscored the entire weekend and speaks to the life of any local band:
Billy, Jack and Joe started a band out in Broken Arrow / drive to all the shows with all the gear in the back of Billy’s El Camino / set up all the amps with a big Oklahoma flag up behind / they ain’t never left the state, but they been back and forth across it a hundred times
Five o’clock comes, get out of work, load up the car, hit the highway / they’ve looked forward to this show all week ever since they played last Friday / head down the block gotta stop at this roadside bar / they played there a time or two so folks know who they are
It ain’t an easy ride / chance at life without compromise / fill in the dreams in a young man’s eyes / night by night, just getting’ by / weekend nights, turnpike after turnpike under the endless Oklahoma sky
Move on to the highway for the four hour trek / maybe show up a little late to play a hell of a set / they walk up to the man and charge to get what they’re owe / if they’re lucky it’ll be enough to get ‘em back home
