Top 100 Oklahoma Albums of the 00s: 80-71

Wednesday, January 6th, 2010

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be counting down the Top 100 Oklahoma Albums of the 2000s. Every weekday, we will unveil another ten Oklahoma albums that helped shape the way Oklahoma music is heard by the outside world.

We asked three dozen musicians, fans and journalists for their opinions on the top albums of the past decade. With their guidance and our own opinions, we compiled what we hope is a decent and fair list.

Hopefully, there’s a good bit of reflection, discovery and enjoyment when listening to these albums through Lala (when available). Enjoy!

80. Jabee - Blood Is The New Black (2008)

Jabee - Blood Is The New Black

Purchase: iTunesLalaAccessHipHop

“A sharp divergence from the popular “party” hip-hop that pours out of radio stations, Jabee utilizes beats and samples heavily centered around soul and jazz. The result is something a little more intricate, with beats reminiscent of Brother Ali or early Kanye West, and an emphasis on soulfulness rather than the ability to “bump.”” - Tyler Branson (The Oklahoma Daily)

There is a bit more pensiveness deep within the torrential waves of echo, feedback and the cocky swagger of his vocals, and his angular guitar often settles into an almost wistful dreaminess. - Oklahoma Gazette

The Muggabears: NYC Band You Need to Hear

Wednesday, April 25th, 2007

The Muggabears

The L Magazine put out their spring music issue today featuring eight “NYC Bands You Need to Hear”.

Norman-to-NYC band The Muggabears were selected as one of the bands:

I’ve probably written about the Muggabears more than any other band in New York City over the past six months or so, and while I was admittedly nervous about over-doing it by including them on this list, I knew that if I were to leave them off, it would be dishonest. They’re another in a long line of young bands that are taking the business side of things into their own hands, self-releasing their three-song debut EP Teenage Cop, which earned them a good amount of buzz and blog-love around here last year. But now that they’ve released their second EP, Night Choreography, they’ve proven beyond any doubt that they’re deserving of a lot more attention. They’re constantly compared to Sonic Youth, which is fair, and to Pavement, which is also fair. But there’s also something darker at work, especially on the new songs — a sinister, foreboding sense of impending destruction that drives all of their best songs. They invariably start with a vocal melody so addictive that you can never quite predict the extent to which they’re going to tear it apart with huge, ringing guitar chords and sudden explosions of noise. It’s like they’re giving you a taste of something they know you’ll love, only to destroy it and replace it with something they love, confident you’ll eventually come around to that as well. And I think they’re right.

Other NYC bands selected were: Vampire Weekend, Frances, Jealous Girlfriends, My Teenage Stride, She Keeps Bees, White Rabbits and Bear Hands.
