Luma

Luma is now Fires of Atlas.

On our first EP, we let ourselves be too limited by our influences and by conventions of normal pop structure. Now we feel like we’ve found ourselves, and we’re just writing music that we love.

From the Oklahoma Gazette:

Fires of Atlas sounds decidedly more experimental than Luma ever was. Gone are the pop anthems with sing-along choruses, which have been replaced with morose pianos and somber, darker melodies. The group will release the three-song “Away from Me” EP next week, a collection of Luma B-sides recorded last year.

LOCAL BAND Q&A: Luma

Friday, February 16th, 2007

Every Friday, we bring you Local Band Q&A via The Oklahoman.

This week, its Luma.

Luma

Local band Q&A: Luma

•Why: Oklahoma City four-piece Luma presents a gripping sound and live performance. Luma’s songs have a way of entrancing you and hooking you in to the melody and groove. For a taste, check them out online at www.myspace.com/lumarock and www.lumarock.com. Look for Luma to release a live DVD in the coming months.
•When: 9 tonight.
•Where: Belle Isle Brewery, 50 Penn Place.

What is the typical creative process?

Marcus Collins, bass: Sometimes I’ll just bring in an idea. Most of the time, it ends up being Stephen coming in with an idea on the guitar, and then we usually build from there. Sometimes he has a structure already built out, but other times, we’re just jamming through something and it continues to form, Hunter starts singing a melody. … The structure of the songs comes in, and we add the lyrics to it.

Stephen Collins, guitar: By the end of it, it’s very collaborative. The song becomes what it is after all four of us get on it. That’s kind of the attitude of the band, too; it’s all four of us making decisions.
