David Cook Releases Debut Album Today

David Cook releases his self-titled debut album today.
The album was produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Kid Rock). Cook wrote or co-wrote every song on the album except for “Light On”. His songwriting collaborators include Chris Cornell, Johnny Rzeznik (Goo Goo Dolls), Zac Maloy (The Nixons) and Raine Maida (Our Lady Peace).
You can buy the album at Amazon.com, iTunes and many others.
“It’s a guitar record, full of gut-busting singing, but also mainstream, melodic, earnest, and anthemic almost to a fault. - Entertainment Weekly
…if you’re looking for some music with substance from an outstanding vocalist, this CD is for you. - The Herald-Dispatch
When he reinvented Mariah Carey’s “Always Be My Baby” as a dirge, David Cook became the most imaginative American Idol talent to date. But working with his heroes (Our Lady Peace’s Raine Maida, Chris Cornell) and Norwegian song doctors Espionage on his Rob Cavallo-produced debut, he leans on his husky howl rather than out-of-the-box songwriting. - Rolling Stone

Man, NPR sure gave this a bad review yesterday on air. Said he had all the right tools, and the setup, to do something new in the industry - but instead choose to Nickelback it up. Not kind.

I heard NPR’s review last night too. The tracks they played were really bad. There’s no authenticity to this type of music. It made me wonder, when David Cook was listening to his tracks was there a moment where he paused and said to himself, “I sound like everybody else.”

The truth is, I can’t tell the difference between Nickelback, Daughtry, and Hinder right now - unless it comes with a photo. The David Cook they were playing on NPR, unfortunately, sounded like another release from any of the above.

I caught his SNL performance and, based on that, Cook is as boring as any of the acts Quentin mentions, with a certain added “karaoke hero” quality to him.
Give me Kelly Clarkson any day of the week. “Since U Been Gone” is a stone jam, and Mike Watt turned up on her last record. She’s nothing if not occasionally interesting- which is more than I can say for Cook.
