Reactions to the Oklahoma Rock Song

Wayne Coyne in the Oklahoma state Senate

There has been a great response so far to Monday’s announcement of The Flaming Lips‘ “Do You Realize?” being named the official Oklahoma Rock Song.

Some samplings of the reaction across the world wide Internets:

The magical positive karmic energy that emanates from Wayne Coyne continues to come back to him in spades every day. Witness the latest: The Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize?” has just been named the “Official Rock Song” of the State of Oklahoma. At first you scratch your head in disbelief, and then you go, “of course.” … Raise your giant styrofoam fists in the air and celebrate another victory for Oklahoma City’s favorite freaks. - Minnesota Public Radio

Denizens of Oklahoma, time to break out the fake blood and hand puppets: After a rigorous nomination process, the Flaming Lips’ “Do You Realize??” is now the state’s Official Rock Song by the order of Oklahoma’s state legislature… - Pitchfork

The state of Oklahoma already has an official song (”Oklahoma” from the musical, natch), but now The Flaming Lips are the state’s official rock representatives. I honestly can’t believe the band won. They even beat Elvis Presley (whose “Heartbreak Hotel” was written by an Oklahoman). Unlikely, but pretty cool. - Prefix Mag

For those of you holding out hope for “Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles”… well, better luck next time. - A.V. Club

I wonder if this means Oklahoma will start playing “Do You Realize??” at sports games. Who can deny how great it would sound just after the national anthem? - Limewire Music Blog

The announcement also caught the ear of: Entertainment Weekly, MTV, Rolling Stone, Dallas Morning News, NME, Chart Attack, Buzzgrinder, About.com, The Oklahoman, The Tulsa World and The Oklahoma Gazette.
