Ripley’s Oklahoma Rock and Roll Radio

Steve Ripley’s foot

Oklahoma music legend Steve Ripley is currently working on a new radio show on Oklahoma rock and roll and its roots. The one-hour show is scheduled to start running on Friday, May 22 on KOSU (91.7 Stillwater/Oklahoma City, 107.5 Bartlesville/Tulsa, 101.9 Okmulgee). The show is scheduled for twenty episodes.

“We’re gonna take a look at not just rock and roll in Oklahoma, but the roots of rock and roll, and we’re gonna follow those roots wherever they take us and let them tell us how we got to this place today… how we got to this thing we call Oklahoma Rock and Roll. As the weeks go by, we’re gonna try to dig deep into the details of the music, and the artists and the musicians that made that music, and how it all ties together. But for the first couple of shows, what I want to do is to try to present the overall picture. I think you’ll find some surprises, and I think at times - I hope at times - you’re gonna be stunned just like we have been each time we find that extra special thing, and that direct link to Oklahoma.” - Steve Ripley

The show will feature music by Leon Russell, J.J. Cale, Charlie Christian, The Disciples, Wanda Jackson, The Collins Kids, Conway Twitty, Lee Hazlewood, Bob and Johnnie Lee Wills, Spade Cooley, Speedy West, Moon Martin, 20/20, Dwight Twilley and many more.

Ripley also promises interviews with Russell, Jim Edgar of Jim Edgar and The Roadrunners, Jimmy Karstein, Jimmy Markham, Duane Eddy, Dr. Guy Logsdon, Sweet Emily and more.

Well, this is just a partial list.

It’s only 11 of the 20 episodes they’re doing. So, it makes sense they would start with those first.

    Hey kids…

Will: I’m not sure what you mean exactly, but I appreciate your input. If you mean play new stuff… there will be some newer artists as the weeks go by, though it is primarily a show about the roots of Oklahoma music.

    Ryan: exactly.

Dennis: I talk to Emily regularly. Had lunch with Emily, Leon, and mutual friend from the UK, Gerard Campbell (the show’s announcer) a few weeks ago. Everybody’s doing great. I’ll be talking to Emily on the show regularly in the weeks to come.

Carol: Thanks so much for listening and for the kind words. Spread the word and keep in touch.

You’re radio show rocks! Finally, some decent radio music in Oklahoma! Too bad, it’s only on Sunday nights! My mom and I have a short Leon history, from back in his Hollywood days…She was in the music business and can appreciate more of the artists that you play, than I know about. I shared it w/ her, tonight and I’m sure she will love it.

    Play on, Steve! :)

Hey great show, reminds me of some of the programs I’ve heard on BBC Radio 2 when living in London. Great listening and very inforrmative. But, heard it for first time Sept 27. Sorry I’ve missed past airings. Any possibility of an archive somewhere where listeners can hear past shows?

I am sure you know of this artist:

Thank you for all of your effort in bringing this program to air.
