Began by Travis Johnson as a solo project in Texas, the band (originally called The Muggabears) took shape in Norman with bassist Kevin Frost and future Evangelicals drummer Austin Stephens. After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, Johnson and Frost moved to New York in 2005 (Stephens stayed behind to play for Evangelicals) and joined up with former OU student Emily Ambruso and drummer Kevin Murphy.
Frost left the band shortly after the recording of Teenage Cop EP in September 2006 and Murphy left sometime after. Rounding out the trio is new drummer Jim Sykes (Marnie Stern, Parts and Labor).
Grooms’ full length, Rejoicer, will be released on October 13 on Death By Audio Records.
