El Paso Hot Button’s new CD drops today!

When I Needed Sympathy is part Kyuss, part Tarantino movie soundtrack.
El Paso Hot Button mastermind Mickey Reece offers up some real gems (”Strobelight Honey”, “Black: Son of Death”) and mixes things up a bit on his second full-length on Little Mafia Records. There’s still plenty of classic EPHB sounds (”They Invented It Stupid”, “Rubies and Pearls”), but new ear candy abounds.
The title track, “When I Needed Sympathy”, is slower than the EPHB tunes we’re used to and features guest vocals from Kelli Brooke Haney of The Oh Johnny! Girls. Haney channels a young Nancy Sinatra in this soulful 1960s-era ballad.
“Eleven Years”, another slow song, is an eerie creepfest. The Kill Bill guitar twangs, the sounds of an upright bass (Tim Melton of The Oh Johnny! Girls) and cello (Andrew Kershen of Forty Minutes of Hell) sends a tingle down the spine. This song would be a perfect soundtrack match for a USA Up All Night horror movie.
When I Needed Sympathy covers some new musical ground for El Paso Hot Button, but doesn’t stray too far from his signature stylings. It’s solemn, creepy, shrieky — and a very solid offering from the one-man band sensation.
