Sarmiento (ex-The Pistol Arrows, ex-The Candles) had the following to say about his decision to release The Declaration of Interdependence for free:
several people have asked about buying hard copies, paying for downloads online or making a donation, sentiments that are greatly appreciated, but for the moment, alchemist records and i are happy to give away the electronic version gratis. as many commentators continue to note, there’s no point in fighting the tide of the free dissemination of music. even more important to me, however, is the necessity of decommodifying the process of music-making and listening.
we’re not going back to the days of waiting eagerly at the record store of a monday night at midnight for the new record from whatever artist to hit the shelves, so we may as well push forward and see if we can come up with an equally exciting way of relating to the music.
